Habitats response for Ukrainian refugees

03-03-2022 | 10:38 On February 24, 2022, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine forcing thousands of people from their homes in search of safety in bordering countries. Over 368,000 people are reported to have fled to neighbouring countries (CNN) with nothing but the clothes on their back and anything that they could carry with them. Without a home to go to, many people are sheltering in tents at the border of their neighbouring country. The conflict in eastern Ukraine has left 3.4 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and protection (OCHA). Habitat for Humanity National Offices in the neighbouring countries of Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia are responding by supporting refugees fleeing to find safety and shelter. Many of the families arriving at the border at single headed, as many Ukrainian parents are choosing to have one parent remain in the country to join the resistance. Funds are being raised to lessen the burden of housing for the Ukrainian refugees. In Romania: The temperature is currently below freezing at the Romanian border, and so the priority here is to source air heaters for people currently living in tents on the border. More updates about our work in Ukraine's neghbouring countries supporting refugees will be provided as information comes in.
